It is a type of cornice I suppose. Or just call it gingerbread on the older houses---whatever--I like it. I bought some with hummingbirds to put on my porch corners once. MB
I think it is called a corbel(not sure of spelling. You might find more info. searching for carpenter gothic or painted lady houses. They always have a lot of gingerbread decoration. The Maine Historical Society in Portland, Maine would surely know. It is beautiful. As an expat Mainer, I do enjoy a bit of Maine on your blog. sues

I don't know what it's called either, but it's pretty! And it adds character to the house.

Love your wooden houses, so "American" to a French eye...
I really enjoy looking a architectural details like this decorated "bracket". The contrast of paint colors enhances the detail in the wood nicely.
