New Rear-end

This week we had a new rear-end put on our Ventura, which makes it run so much better! The new chrome cover is all shiny, which attracts my Muscovy ducks & guineas.

It did fit!

Today at lunchtime I picked up a kiddie pool for the ducks to swim in...there was some speculation about whether or not it would fit in my Suburban, but, by golly, it did!! My son's ducks are gonna LOVE it...

What's in the box?!

CHICKS!! We let each of the kids choose what breed they wanted to raise. We now have Americaunas, Black Giants & Light Brahmas, as well as some broilers to put in the freezer in a few months....

Precious Cargo

This morning we took a quick trip down to the Post Office to pick up our chicks & bring them home! The girls & I were sure excited!!

Bird's Eye View

One of the girls took my camera the other day & took lots of pictures around the farm. I liked this one looking out of the door of the chicken coop into their run...

Guineas on Patrol

Our guineas are free ranging now that spring is here. We are really hoping that they will control the tick population. They sure do roam EVERYWHERE & they are constantly picking & scratching at the ground! Let's keep our fingers crossed that they find each & every little tick before it can reach us!

Which came first?

Well, this little guy obviously didn't come out of an egg of this size!

That's 'Big Bob', the jumbo egg that the kids collected last week...we just had to compare it to the chicks!

Holy Moly

One of our hens was overly productive today...seriously! This egg is waaaay bigger than what they normally lay!! It's HUGE!!!! For those of you that are skeptical...we measured it!! (That's a normal-sized egg on the other side of the tape measure.) 'Course now we can't eat it 'cause it's just too cool & they want to show everyone...

Geese & Goslings

Can you tell which ones are the young ones? They are almost as big as their parents! Did you know that geese graze on grass, just like horses? They keep our lawn mowed, although this isn't the lawn, this is the horse pasture. The horses ignore them, for the most part. Occasionally they will get too close and receive bites from the angry adult geese. Why they don't kick them is beyond me, but they never do. Attitude is everything in the animal world and other animals will give you space, regardless of how much smaller you are, if you are meaner than they are themselves. It's very interesting!

Look at what hatched!

Springtime is such an amazing time on the farm. We love to see all the babies. The geese are proving to be wonderful parents. They hatched out 8 goslings!

The Duckling Whisperer

Remember this post from last spring? Our youngest is spending lots of quality time with our new ducklings.

Daisy & The Peepers

Daisy sits and watches them for hours. She's very gentle and sniffs them sometimes, but she doesn't seem interested in having chicken nuggets for lunch. I don't leave her unattended though. That might be too much temptation.

Awww...peepers!

They are just too cute!! So, I had to bring them home... ;-)

Mother Goose

Even though she's not really their mother, and they are already as big as she is, our young geese follow her everywhere....

Barred Rock Hen

The Barred Plymouth Rock is a dual-purpose hen, a great layer, or meaty enough for the stew pot. Their coloring is eye-catching, although they look like jail-birds from old-time movies!
