I call him silly because he thought that if he froze, then I wouldn't be able to see him! In the second photo you can see where he is - he had scaled the stucco wall of our house and was headed for the roof! What amazing agility!!
We also have brown squirrels in the US. Most of the ones around my house are brown.
They love to get into my bird feeder and feast on the seeds. Sometimes they even come right up to the patio door and look inside. I'm not letting them in though.
I believe that squirrels are an alien invasion from another planet. They've even gone so far as to infiltrate The White House. They can cross onto the grounds without anyone batting an eye. The rest of us would be shot if we tried that! Be careful, Crittoria, be very careful.
